NET-A-PORTER

Do you pay Swiss import VAT and customs charges when ordering from NET-A-PORTER?

Verdict
All-inclusive

On the Swiss version of the site, the price shown already contains Swiss import VAT, and NET-A-PORTER's courier clears the parcel. Nothing extra is asked for at the door. You only add the delivery fee, which is waived above EUR 300.

High

The DDP wording sits on the Switzerland-localised payment and terms pages, which is strong evidence. The site never lists Switzerland by name as a DDP market, and the same terms template also describes DDU destinations.

The reasoning

The Switzerland storefront (en-ch) states on its Payment page that taxes and duties are calculated for the shipping destination and itemised on the order summary, and that shipping is on a DDP (Delivery Duty Paid) basis with all relevant import taxes and duties included in the final purchase price. The Swiss Terms and Conditions repeat the same split: DDP countries have the import duty and tax built into the price, while DDU countries are billed separately by DHL. Delivery for Switzerland is quoted at EUR 8 standard (free over EUR 300) or EUR 15 next business day, with DHL named as the shipping partner, so the courier handles the clearance itself.

What complicates it slightly is that no page names Switzerland explicitly in a DDP country list. The DDP statement is inferred from it appearing on the Swiss-localised help pages, while the general terms still describe a DDU scenario for some destinations. Fragrances and battery items are restricted to the standard air-safe service, which changes the shipping option but not the tax treatment, and no recent Swiss buyer reports were found to corroborate or contradict the pages.

If it goes wrong

An order routed through a marketplace or partner-fulfilled seller could be handled differently from the standard DHL DDP flow. The same applies to a very high-value item held for a manual customs check.
