Do you pay Swiss import VAT and customs charges when ordering from Amazon.de?
Items sold and shipped by Amazon arrive with Swiss VAT already settled at checkout, so nothing is due at the door. Parcels sent directly by a third-party seller can still bring an import VAT and handling bill on delivery.
Amazon's own page uses the word currently about covering import fees, which signals the arrangement can change. The seller-fulfilled branch is the part I could not verify from a current Amazon page, only from a 2025 seller forum thread.
Amazon's Swiss delivery help page states that Amazon.de has applied Swiss VAT and import fees to goods shipped to Switzerland since 1 January 2019. The standard rate of 8.1% is shown for most departments, with 2.6% for books. The estimate appears in the basket as an import fee, and Amazon says the buyer pays nothing more if the real charge turns out higher. For goods sold by Amazon itself, the page says Amazon covers the import fees. Carriers or agents draw on the deposit to pay Swiss customs, so the parcel arrives cleared.
An order from a third-party seller who ships it themselves rather than through Amazon. That parcel can arrive DAP and the carrier then bills VAT plus its own clearance fee.
“Amazon currently covers the Import Fees to Switzerland for products sold by Amazon.”
“Carriers or agents use these funds to pay Import Fees on your behalf to the competent Customs authorities.”
“For order shipped by Amazon, the entire Swiss customs process is handled by Amazon.”
“wird automatisch die deutsche Mehrwertsteuer abgezogen und die Schweizer Mehrwertsteuer draufgeschlagen”
“sich bei Amazon beschwert hat dass er 29.02 CHF Zollgeuebhren zahlen musste”
